During the session an attendee described a targeted invoice scam that the Stow Lions Club nearly paid. The participant said the group received a message from an email address shown as "TownofStowe@accountant.com" that included official-looking letterhead and an invoice asking for a wire transfer of over $7,000; a member who re-examined the message noticed the email domain and property address were wrong.
Eric Souza used the example to illustrate how attackers can harvest public meeting minutes and vendor information to craft convincing scams. He warned that when an attacker compromises an employee email account they can monitor legitimate exchanges, then substitute fraudulent payment instructions—an approach that has been used to steal large municipal sums in other cases.
