Planning commissioners ask County Board for one-year data-center moratorium to craft zoning rules

Commissioner Chris DuBose introduced a motion asking the County Board to enact a one-year moratorium on data centers so Chisago County could develop zoning regulations for such uses. DuBose said the pause would provide time to study impacts and draft appropriate controls; Commissioner Jim McCarthy referenced a U.S. Department of Justice court case in discussion of potential jurisdictional impacts. The Commission voted unanimously to recommend the moratorium (motion by Chris DuBose; second by Dave Whitney; 7-0).
The resolution is a recommendation to the County Board rather than an immediate moratorium. Staff and commissioners indicated the moratorium would be intended to give the county time to craft zoning language and review potential legal implications before new data-center proposals arrive.
