Consultants present Easton's Beach resiliency options after June workshops

Teresa Crean, director of resilience and sustainability for the City of Newport, opened the meeting and introduced the consultant team responsible for the Easton's Beach resiliency study. The consultants recapped three days of public workshops held in mid-June and said the work aims to balance dune-based storm protection with continued public access and amenities.
Beth Kermsy, consultant lead, described the project goals and the team: DBVW architects (prime), Fuss & O'Neil (landscape and coastal engineering support), and Woods Hole Group (resilience modeling). She said the team observed increasing storm frequency and damage to promenade access and facilities and that the design process will prioritize nature-based solutions such as beach nourishment and dune restoration while seeking to preserve essential amenities.
The consultants said their modeling team will evaluate resilience outcomes through the fall, with a final concept planned for October and cost estimates and funding roadmaps by December. They invited continued public input via a survey on the project website through the end of July and noted slides and the recorded presentation will be posted for review.
