Resident Stephanie Torres said she supports the store’s reopening but asked the council to deny an alcohol license because of safety concerns for students near the site, saying the neighborhood “does not need alcohol” near the school and asking the council to prioritize student safety.
Councilmember Castillo, representing District 5, told the council the case raised neighborhood concerns and noted input from school administrators. The council moved to deny the variance; no members of the public were registered to speak in favor at the vote, and the motion to deny passed.
The denial leaves the store unable to sell alcohol under the requested variance. The council recorded notices and neighborhood responses in the staff report: 17 notices opposed within 300 feet; 71 supportive responses outside the 300‑foot radius; and a school district opposition noted in the record. No further action on the application was recorded at the meeting.
