An amendment to change the proposed contract term for Travis Mayfield from two years to four years failed on a 3–3 vote at the June 11 Wilson County Board of Education meeting. The chair noted that "A tie is a failed motion," and the board returned to the original motion, which then passed unanimously.
Supporters of a longer term argued a four-year contract helps long-term stability and reduces turnover. One committee member said, "I would like to see it a 4 year contract and not 18 months" to allow for a full learning curve. Mayfield expressed a different concern: "I do not want to forfeit my tenure rights. Period." Another committee member responded that "you can keep your tenure with the 4 year contract. You do not have to forfeit tenure." The amendment nonetheless failed and the board approved the contract as written with a sick-days edit.
