Mayfield urges annual performance goals, not fixed contract metrics

Travis Mayfield told the Wilson County Board of Education during public comment that he removed many specific performance metrics from the contract and proposed the board and director develop a separate annual performance document to set targets and evaluate outcomes. "I took out the goals and put them in a performance document, which we should develop," Mayfield said while describing his compromise to move metrics into a policy-based review process.
Mayfield enumerated specific measures he would prioritize if hired: "I'm gonna focus on 3rd grade, ELA proficiency," he said, and he named TCAP growth goals for ELA, math and science, a graduation rate "greater than 95%," a district ACT average target for 2027, and chronic absenteeism under 15.1 percent. He also urged an annual review of safety assessments and a comprehensive analysis of the district's health-insurance program, and he recommended the board update district policies so audit findings are routed to the board in addition to other offices.
