Superintendent Fortisio said the district is taking next steps to evaluate zero‑emission (electric) buses and will meet with New York State Electric and Gas and National Grid on Jan. 20 to review charging and capacity questions. The meeting, hosted by the Erie Niagara School Superintendents Association, will include information about where the district’s buses are garaged to help utilities assess distribution needs.
"It's not whether they're they're for or against, 0 emission buses. It's whether they they feel the infrastructure can handle it," Fortisio said on the record. Board members discussed the uncertainty over whether infrastructure upgrades would qualify for building aid or transportation aid and noted existing rebates for chargers, but also that infrastructure costs and state support remain unclear.
The board emphasized that committing to a project without cost and infrastructure estimates may be premature; the district will gather information from utilities before deciding how to proceed.
