Principal Jeff Cervone told the Eden board the district enacted a tiered, progressive approach to comply with a recent state law banning internet‑enabled devices in schools. Cervone said administrators scrambled to implement the rule and focused communications to families and students.
"We had 42 cell phone offenses out of 650 students roughly," Cervone said, and he added that 10th grade had the highest number of offenses with 13 and 8th grade the second highest with 10. Cervone said a small group of students accounts for most repeat violations and that most students correct behavior after an initial consequence. The principal described the policy as effective overall while identifying middle and early high school as areas for more targeted interventions.
The presentation included charts of offenses and repeat violations; board members asked clarifying questions about enforcement and consequences and about the role of lockers as the district requires students to store backpacks and phones.
