The draft director contract presented during the Wilson County School Board’s June 8 special meeting lists concrete academic performance targets and attendance thresholds intended to measure district progress over the next several years.
Among the items read into the record were a goal for third‑grade ELA proficiency described as "above the state average by 5% or reaching 70% by 2030," and specific TCAP and subject proficiency targets for 2027 and 2028. The chair read detailed entries for TCAP and other metrics, including an explicit chronic absenteeism target of "less than 15.1%."
Several board members urged that the contract include a 2026 baseline so the board can measure year‑over‑year progress rather than only comparing to a state target. One member noted the state average is currently 42% and that Wilson County’s local results already exceed that average; another asked for the district's current numbers to be supplied prior to finalizing the contract. Mayfield said he "pulled that information directly from our strategic plan. Basically, verbatim," and offered to provide two‑year benchmarks the board requested.
Board discussion also focused on where metrics should live: some members argued that highly granular measures already tracked in the district strategic plan or by staff need not be repeated in a contract, while others said written, measurable goals were appropriate for accountability. The board directed staff to provide the current 2026 baseline figures before the June 11 reconvening.
