Audit finds clean opinions; district posts modest $145,000 surplus
Summary
External auditors reported an unmodified opinion on Eden Central School District's fiscal 2024–25 financial statements, no material weaknesses in internal controls, and no questioned costs in federal child nutrition programs; the district ended the year with a roughly $145,000 surplus and moved money into reserves.

Auditors from Drescher Malachy told the Eden Central School District Board that the district's fiscal-year financial statements for the year ended June 30, 2025, will receive an unmodified opinion and are free of material misstatement. "Our opinion is an unmodified opinion, which is the best you can get," auditor Charles said.
Charles said auditors also found no material weaknesses or significant deficiencies in internal controls and reported no questioned costs in federal programs after testing the child nutrition cluster. The firm's management letter, he said, contains only guidance on upcoming accounting pronouncements and no additional recommendations based on this year's testing.
The presentation included a five-year trend analysis: total revenues for 2024–25 were about $35,000,000 and total expenditures about $34,840,000, yielding a net change of roughly $145,000. Auditors told the board that much of the year-over-year expenditure increase'about $900,000'was tied to transportation purchases, including bus acquisitions delayed from prior years.
Charles also reviewed fund-balance changes and reserve activity, noting increases in retirement reserves and capital-project reserves while the unrestricted portion declined. He reminded the board that school districts are limited to maintaining unassigned fund balance at 4% under New York Real Property Tax Law §1318 and said Eden has aimed to remain compliant.
The board moved to approve the draft external audit report prepared by the auditors; the motion passed by voice vote.
