Wilson County board honors state‑champion student athletes and certified athletic directors

The Wilson County Board of Education opened its June 18 meeting by recognizing student athletes and staff for recent state championships and professional achievements. Chuck Whitlock, invited to the podium by the chair, described a girls' 4x100 relay of sixth- and seventh‑graders that recorded a time of "50.38 seconds" at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and asked the honorees to step forward for photos.
Whitlock also highlighted three athletic directors who completed national certification and will mentor other middle‑school athletic directors: Denise DeFevers of Mount Juke Middle School, Missy Hunter of Gladeville Middle School, and Michael Berardi of Mount Juliet High School. "They love our kids, our family, our staff," Whitlock said as the board applauded the group.
Board members encouraged community attendance at middle‑school sporting events as a low‑cost way to support student athletes, and the chair noted those programs reflect broader positive developments in district athletics. The board presented honorees with brief remarks, photos and an expression of appreciation before moving on to the consent agenda.
