Planning board recommends special-use permit for mixed auto-repair and sales at 5822 Transit Road with sales-space limit and tire containment conditions

The Depew Planning Board on Aug. 6 recommended the Village Board approve a special-use permit for automotive repair and limited vehicle sales at 5822 Transit Road, subject to conditions addressing tire storage, parking allocations and maintenance of the residential buffer.

Applicant Joe Darwish described the proposed business as “a auto repair, mix of everything, little bit of car sales, little bit of auto repair, little bit of tires altogether.” He told the board he intends to operate roughly 9 a.m.–6 p.m. weekdays and may open Saturdays shorter hours; he said used tires would be kept inside or in a secured container and removed weekly or biweekly.

Board members spent substantial time resolving how many vehicles could be displayed for sale under the submitted site plan. The plan showed 14 total parking spaces; after discussion the board included a sales-space limit in the motion (motion language referenced seven sales spots and that the remainder be used for customer/employee parking) and required tire containment and cleanup plans. Member Soja recused because of a conflict; the roll call recorded four yes votes and the motion carried.

The Planning Board’s recommendation will be forwarded to the Village Board; the recommendation includes the sales-space limit, a requirement that tires not be stored against the property line and that the screening buffer between commercial and residential properties be maintained.
