Residents and commissioners press board on proposed data center rules, drone and noise concerns

Commissioners and residents discussed proposed changes to Butler County’s draft Data Center Regulations during public comment and other-items updates at the July 28 meeting.
Meghan Wright of Towanda presented the board with notebooks containing suggested changes to the regulations and asked the commissioners to consider them. Amy Gardner of El Dorado expressed worry about drones flying at night over her property in connection with data center activity. County Counselor Terrence Huelskamp told the board he has been discussing possible changes to the regulations. Administrator Will Johnson reminded the board of the Planning and Zoning public hearing on the Data Center Regulations scheduled for Aug. 4.
Several commissioners said they had recently visited data centers in Kansas City. Commissioner Jeff Masterson said he felt vehicle and train noise around a facility was louder than the facility itself; Commissioner Darren Jackson said tunnel noise from data centers was a concern he wanted addressed in the regulations. Commissioner Dan Woydziak said he will visit a Kansas City data center on Aug. 13. The board did not take action on the regulations at the July 28 meeting; staff and counsel described ongoing review ahead of the public hearing.
