New Wilson County director highlights rising test scores, enrollment and bus staffing plans

Travis Mayfield, the new director of Wilson County Schools, delivered his first director's report to the board on July 23, highlighting academic gains, enrollment growth and operational updates. "Wilson County Schools has done a great job this past year," Mayfield said, introducing Dr. Coughlin to present assessment data.

Dr. Coughlin said district proficiency in ELA, math and social studies reached new highs across grades 3-12: "We have reached another all time high in all 3 content areas," he said, reporting district ELA at 56.1% compared with the state average of 42.3% and noting multi-year gains since 2021 (for example, a 14.1 percentage-point gain in ELA). Mayfield also reported enrollment projections are up by about 229 students and announced personnel moves including a new principal at Gladeville Middle School and a new school health coordinator.

On transportation, Mayfield outlined route consolidation to improve efficiency amid driver shortages and described recruitment and training timelines for new drivers. He said the district is using tablets to streamline driver reporting and discipline referrals and that proposed retention bonuses could help keep drivers in place. "We have added over 20 positions if everybody that's in the pipeline can continue," he said.

Facility updates included a Central Pike Elementary ribbon-cutting scheduled for July 29 after receipt of a certificate of occupancy, ongoing sewer hookups, and asbestos abatement and stormwater permitting issues at the Lakeview renovation site. Mayfield also said the district has submitted FEMA paperwork and expects approximately $17,000,000 to support the Lakeview renovation.
