EMSC grant cut to roughly one-third of expected funds; council considers cost-saving steps

Michael Bolu told the council the EMSC grant award for the current funding period is significantly smaller than expected.
"Our current funding period for the remaining of our year is $68,510 instead of the $190,000 that we were anticipating," Bolu said, noting the reduction leaves the program roughly a third of the expected level and will constrain planned activities. He said HRSA has treated the amount as final for now but that there is precedent for later adjustments; the office is preparing contingency plans in case additional funds do not arrive.
Council members discussed cost-saving options such as routing an upcoming November meeting virtually to save travel expenses and prioritizing lower-cost, high-impact activities if the award does not change. Irene Nabis offered to help draft letters of support and talking points to advocate for restored funding.
No formal budget reallocation was adopted at the meeting; staff said they will return with recommended priorities if the award remains at the reduced level.
