District staff said Atmos Energy donated $10,000 to support the Lena Start program, which provides tools for families with children under age 3, and a $7,000 contribution earlier in the year toward a book vending machine at McKenzie Elementary. "We're fostering the love of reading by recognizing them for good attendance, good behavior...so we're so excited for the impact it's gonna have," a district presenter said when thanking the company.
District and foundation representatives said the gifts will help purchase materials and expand early literacy outreach to families; trustees publicly thanked Atmos Energy and the Mesquite ISD Education Foundation for partnering on the effort.
