Mesquite ISD board approves budget amendments tied to HB2, reducing adopted deficit

The Mesquite ISD Board approved amendments to the district budget that incorporate projected HB2 revenue and the district compensation plan. Mr. Prado summarized the packet: the food and child nutrition services budget will increase by $330,000 to reflect salary increases, and he said the amendment adds approximately $18,400,000 of state revenue while increasing payroll expenses by about $15,900,000.
"So essentially our budget deficit goes from 19.3 to $17,200,000," Mr. Prado said while walking trustees through the amendment. He explained that the district had cut more than $16 million in expenses in the prior year and that administrators will continue a transparent planning process in the coming months to present a balanced 2026–27 budget. Trustees moved and seconded the amendment and voted to approve it by voice vote.
