Mesquite ISD fine arts enrollment rebounds; district earns NAMM recognition

Mesquite ISD’s fine arts department told the board July 14 that music and arts participation has grown significantly, with several programs now exceeding pre-pandemic enrollment.
The presenter reported approximately 850 students enrolled in high-school band and about 2,467 students in middle-school band, and said orchestra enrollment rose by more than 350 students over two years. "As a percentage, 80% of all students in Mesquite ISD are involved in a music or in a fine arts program in our district," the presenter said, noting the district does not double-count students who participate in multiple programs.
The report highlighted competitive successes — 68 ensembles received UIL sweepstakes awards and multiple students earned All-State recognition — and noted the district was named a "Best Community for Music Education" by the NAMM Foundation for the 12th consecutive year. Presenters discussed retention and recruiting strategies, saying continuity across buildings and targeted scheduling help keep students in programs when they move from middle to high school.
