Local animal-safety group says 1,200 pets spayed or neutered; Res Dog explores permanent Belen facility

Richard Knittle, speaking for the Belen Animal Safety Committee, told the council that the group and Res Dog Rescue have run spay/neuter clinics at the business center and expect “approximately 1,200 animals will have been spayed or neutered by end of summer.” He said the rescue is exploring a permanent brick-and-mortar facility slated to open by January 2027 that would offer spay/neuter and vaccination services three to four days per week, and that a donated metal building is being moved to a city site to serve as temporary animal holding while volunteers are solicited to assist with assembly.
The committee also announced an Oct. 2 golf tournament to benefit Res Dog Rescue and asked residents to volunteer for an upcoming booth at Our Lady of Belen. The committee framed its work as a collaboration with City of Belen staff to expand services and reduce stray or unsterilized-animal impacts in neighborhoods.
