The Mesquite ISD Board approved a shift to disburse final stay-pay payments in the June 2026 paycheck, moving the payment into the current 2025-26 fiscal year. An administrator explained stay pay was instituted as a retention incentive for qualifying full-time employees with five-year increments of continuous service; professional employees receive $5,000 while paraprofessionals and auxiliary staff receive $2,500.
Finance staff (Prado) said the district typically budgets around $2.8 million annually for these payments but that the final-year payout is running higher in projections. Prado said the estimate for the final payout would be "around $3,800,000" and noted about 920 employees are involved, though staff said they are still refining the data and will present a budget amendment in February with final figures. The administrator said the change replaces the prior practice of paying in November of the following fiscal year.
Board members asked whether employees would have to wait for the refined numbers; staff replied the payments can proceed in June and the district will reconcile the budget with a February amendment. The board approved the early disbursement by voice vote (motion by Mr. Bingham, second by Mr. Everett); the president announced the motion carried.
