Trustees accept certified tax values for 2025; homestead exemptions change and protests rise

The Mesquite ISD Board voted to accept certified taxable values for tax year 2025 after a staff briefing on the appraisal roll and associated changes. Trustees approved the resolution by voice vote.
Mr. Prado summarized key details in the appraisal roll, noting that it reflects changes to homestead exemptions: "what you have in front of you includes the homestead increase from 100,000 to 140,000 and from 10,000 to 60,000 for over 65," he said. Prado also reported a sharp rise in appraisal protests compared with the prior year: "Last year, we had approximately 1,500 protests. This year, we have approximately 4,500 protests." He said the appraisal district (DCAD) will provide monthly updates as protests are worked into the roll.
The board moved to approve a resolution accepting the certified values; President Carbo called for the voice vote and the motion carried.
