The Mesquite ISD Board approved a charter to form a strategic budget committee after Superintendent Dr. Rivera told trustees the district is operating under a $17,200,000 deficit budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year. The board moved and approved the charter by voice vote.
Dr. Rivera described the committee as a transparency measure that will include community members, students, staff, business owners, two trustees and administrators. "We have adopted a $17,200,000 deficit budget," he said, and added that the committee will "open up the books" and present a recommendation to the board in December. The board would then adopt, amend or reject the committee's recommendation before staff translates it into the 2026–27 budget.
Dr. Rivera said the committee's review is intended to explain why items were cut, downsized, shifted or reallocated and to guide the district back to a balanced budget for the following school year. The motion to form the committee was made, seconded and approved with trustees voting "aye" by voice.
