Board adopts 'impractical' transportation resolution; members discuss state work group report

The board voted unanimously July 14 to adopt a resolution declaring transportation to certain school-of-choice or nonpublic providers impractical for the 2026–27 school year and to provide in-lieu stipends to affected families.
Board members and staff discussed the practical reasons for the determination: limited ridership on certain school-of-choice routes, driver availability and the cost-benefit of operating routes for a small number of riders. The board noted the current stipend is roughly $606 per pupil and that the 2026–27 rate has been discussed at $636. Superintendent Jeff and treasurer staff framed the decision as a balance between service expectations and logistics.
Discussion also referenced a recent Transportation Work Group report and related materials from House Bill 96. Treasurer Greg said the report is extensive and includes proposals (not law) that would, among other things, consider removing the "practicality" option and examine full funding and other systemic changes. Trustees cautioned that work-group proposals could push districts to reduce services (particularly for high schools) or alter how routings are planned. The board approved the resolution by roll call 5–0.
