Bastrop ISD approves low-attendance waiver for Emile Elementary after safety-related absence spike

Chris Tawater, Director of PEIMS & Data Quality, asked the board to approve filing a low-attendance waiver with the Texas Education Agency for Emile Elementary after an attendance decline tied to a reported potential threat. Tawater said that on Sept. 16 the campus received notice of a potential threat during dismissal, and while an investigation "confirmed no safety threat," attendance dropped to 82.3% the following day. He told trustees that Emile's average attendance the previous year was 93.9% and that the resulting 11.6-percentage-point decline meets the waiver criteria in the Student Attendance Accounting Handbook. The board voted unanimously to approve filing the waiver, which, if accepted by TEA, will allow the district to excuse the instructional day for attendance and Foundation School Program funding calculations.
Trustee Matthew Mix moved to file the waiver and Trustee Chris M. Dillon seconded the motion. There was no further board discussion recorded; the motion carried unanimously. The district will submit the waiver request to TEA per the handbook's procedure and supporting documentation provided by campus staff.
