Wise County holds budget hearing, Board confirms freeze on nonessential spending

The Wise County Board of Supervisors held a publicly advertised hearing on the proposed FY26/27 county budget on June 11, 2026, during which four citizens—Walter Crouse, Kathy Selvage, Jane Branham and H. William Smith—appeared to provide comments. The hearing was closed after public testimony.
Vice-Chairman John T. Schoolcraft moved to approve the minutes and the Board discussed next steps for budget adoption; Chairman J. H. Rivers said a date and time to adopt the County and School budgets would be set at the conclusion of the meeting. The Board also unanimously confirmed a freeze on all nonessential purchases, expenditures and travel for FY26/27 on a motion by Fred Luntsford and second by Robert R. Adkins. The Board approved budget amendment #52 during the same meeting.
The Treasurer, Delores Smith, presented a review of General Fund cash and investments and provided budget-to-actual comparisons through May 31 (updated through June 10, 2026), estimated General Fund balances and property tax collection updates to inform the Board’s budgeting work. The presentation highlighted the county’s efforts to maintain a balanced budget and to monitor revenues and expenditures while planning departmental allocations for the coming fiscal year.
The Board recessed until June 25, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., when it is expected to finalize the adoption schedule and any remaining budget actions.
