The Salt Lake City Council on a unanimous voice vote adopted a joint ceremonial resolution with the mayor proclaiming June 2026 as Pride Month.
Council member Wharton read the resolution, which recognized the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising and pledged municipal support for LGBTQ+ inclusion. After the vote, Chad Cole, executive director of the Utah Pride Center, accepted the resolution and thanked the council and mayor for leadership and continued commitment "to the entire state of Utah." Cole said Pride is about visibility, safety and belonging and described the year's theme as "Pride Elevated." (Chad Cole, executive director, Utah Pride Center.)
The resolution asks residents to be allies and join local festivities. The council and the mayor emphasized that the proclamation is ceremonial; no policy or budgetary action was attached to the reading. The resolution was offered and adopted during the council's regular meeting and photo opportunity followed.
The action is symbolic but was framed by council members and community advocates as an affirmation of municipal support at a time they said national and state-level debates over LGBTQ+ rights remain active. The council scheduled no additional action tied to the proclamation.
