Brenham ISD to phase out five buses to meet SB 546 seat-belt deadline

Director of Transportation Brian Gibson briefed the board on SB 546, the state requirement concerning seat belts on school buses. Trustees voted that immediate retrofit of non-compliant buses is not financially feasible and adopted a plan to phase out the remaining five non-compliant buses, aiming to reach 100% three-point belt compliance by September 1, 2029.
Trustee Kyle Hafner moved the plan, saying in the motion, "Move that immediate retrofit is not financially feasible, and instead plan to phase out the remaining five (5) non-compliant buses, achieving 100% 3-Point Belt Compliance by September 1, 2029 as presented." Trustee Shawn Koonce seconded the motion and the board voted unanimously to adopt the phased compliance plan.
