Brenham ISD approves No Kid Hungry grant to expand summer 'meals to go' program

The Brenham ISD Board of Trustees voted to accept a No Kid Hungry grant to support an expanded summer meals-to-go program, approving $17,382 for the child nutrition department for fiscal year 2026. Cassandra Davis, speaking for child nutrition, said the district will offer 10-day meal bundles on alternate Mondays from June 1 through July 27 with two pickup windows (09:30–10:30 a.m. and 4:30–6:00 p.m.).
Davis told the board the district had increased breakfast participation by 6% and lunch participation by 10% after implementing the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), and she supplied specific counts: "That was an extra 31,221 breakfast and an extra 50,218 lunches this year compared to last year." She also reported 321 children signed up for the June 1 pickup as of her last check. Board member Kelvin Raven moved to accept the grant and Kyle Hafner seconded; the chair called for and recorded an aye vote and said the motion carried.
The program is open to all children in the area (not limited to Brenham ISD students); Davis said the meals are federally reimbursed and designed to be microwave-ready and individually packaged. Board members praised the proposal and supported funding to sustain meal access through the summer.
