Arlington ISD trustees approve plan to shift sixth graders to junior high, 5–2

The Arlington ISD Board of Trustees voted 5–2 to approve a recommendation from a review committee to transition sixth-grade students into junior high campuses as part of a districtwide grade-level configuration plan. Chief Schools Officer Dr. Bret Champion summarized committee findings emphasizing curriculum alignment, facilities readiness, social-emotional supports and stakeholder input, and said implementation would be "graceful, purposeful, and collaborative."
Trustee Justin Chapa moved and Trustee Larry Mike seconded the motion "to approve the Junior High/Middle School Grade Level Configuration." The vote was five in favor (McMurrough, Haynes, Richardson, Chapa, Mike) and two opposed (Wilbanks, Fowler). District leaders said there is no definitive implementation date; the earliest possible rollout could be the 2027'028 school year pending development and communication of a comprehensive plan.
Board members requesting more detail emphasized facilities readiness, special-population transitions and clear family communication before any change is implemented.
