Veterans Affairs director reports surge in calls, aims to reach 3,000 unserved vets

The Commissioners recognized Veterans Affairs Director Frank Araujo on his one-year anniversary and heard his annual report at the Feb. 12 meeting. Chief Clerk Andrew M. Seder introduced Araujo and the board offered praise for outreach growth; Commissioner Smith said Araujo is "well respected" for stepping up the program.
Araujo reported that before his arrival the office received 146 calls; in his first six months the office received 460 calls. He said the office opened 41 new cases in 2024 and 109 in 2025 and estimated that Wayne County has about 4,000 veterans, of which roughly 1,000 are currently being served. "I have felt welcomed from the get-go and the feeling of welcomeness has not stopped," Araujo said. He told the board his goal is to reach the approximately 3,000 veterans not yet engaged with county services.
