Board asked to appropriate $500,000 to repair, replace Glenvar Middle HVAC units

District facilities staff told the board that two makeup-air units at Glenvar Middle School are impaired—one needs replacement and the other requires significant repairs. Todd Cagle said the larger unit (MAU 1) "is a makeup air unit... The cost of that is about $420,000," and the smaller unit needs about $80,000 in burner and reheat repairs. He asked the board to appropriate $500,000 from minor capital special projects and, if there is consensus, to place the request on the consent agenda for the next regular meeting.
Board members questioned the age and expected life of the equipment and whether a full replacement of the air handler would be needed. Staff explained that the air handler itself typically lasts the life of the building, while the burner sets and control components were obsolete and parts are no longer available, prompting the targeted replacement and repair approach. Staff also warned of long lead times for custom units if ordered now (staff estimated delivery in December).
