Enrollment falls about 1,000 students; board reviews staffing, class‑size and excess teachers

Administration reported a continuing enrollment decline: the PEIMS snapshot for the 2023‑24 year showed 37,065 students, the district’s projection estimated a loss of about 1,400 students, and the current enrollment as of Aug. 30 stood at 36,086. CFO Alejandro Cespedes said numbers fluctuate but confirmed the district is operating with roughly 1,000 fewer students than last year’s snapshot.
Human Resources and campus leaders reviewed staffing guidelines and class‑size ranges. At the elementary level the board‑approved target is 22:1 in early grades; middle and high school targets are larger (27:1 middle; 26:1 high school) and principals continue to balance master schedules. HR reported 28 elementary certified FTE adjustments and 14 classified FTE actions already completed; secondary campuses reported excess teachers (9 in middle school and 16 in high school) who are presently assigned to campus duties and to cover classes while the district balances staffing. Trustees asked administrators to verify certification when PE coaches or other staff are used as temporary classroom teachers and to provide periodic updates as enrollments change.
