Lynden council adopts 1% property tax levy increase for 2025

The Lynden City Council on Nov. 18 adopted Ordinance 24-1694 to set the 2025 property tax levy and apply the full 1% increase permitted under state statute. Councilor Kyle Strengholt moved and Councilor Mark Wohlrab seconded the ordinance; the motion passed on a 7-0 vote.
The minutes state the ordinance includes a projected $39,207.83 increase to the levy (excluding increases from new construction, annexations and state-assessed utility valuations). Preliminary calculations from the Whatcom County Assessor's Office indicated an estimated mil rate of $1.05835 for 2025, about $0.0016 higher than the 2024 rate; the council noted final figures will be updated when the county provides assessed valuations.
The action satisfied the statutory requirement (RCW 84.52.020) to set the annual levy on or before Nov. 30. The council's adoption completes this step ahead of the Dec. 2 budget adoption date.
