The Brownsville Independent School District Board of Trustees voted 4–3 on June 24 to name Dr. Timothy E. Cuff as the lone finalist to become the district's next superintendent following a closed executive session. Trustee Minerva Peña moved the nomination and Trustee Carlos Elizondo seconded; the motion carried with Yeas: Garza, Ortiz, Peña, Elizondo; Nays: Lopez Valdez, Gonzalez, Grantland.
Board President Daniella Lopez Valdez acknowledged objections from the community and candidates and said the board had not met public expectations for confidentiality during the search. "I would also like to apologize to the public and to those candidates who did apply and who thought that they were in a process that served as an integrity and had discretion," she said, adding the board had sought to run a thorough search.
Trustees offered divergent post‑vote reactions on the dais. Trustee Neida Ruth Grantland said she had evaluated candidates by quantitative and qualitative criteria and would continue to support student‑focused governance; Trustee Denise Garza urged all members to work together to advance the district. Several trustees said they wanted the district to present a clear transition plan and for the lone finalist to understand community and staff concerns before assuming any permanent role.
The board did not adopt additional procedural steps or a binding employment contract in the open meeting; Texas law requires a public notice period before final employment action on a lone finalist. The board said the district will make further announcements about next steps and timelines consistent with state law.
