Canutillo ISD board approves pay for staff sent home after Bill Childress Elementary closure

Trustee Borrego asked whether employees should be compensated if staff are required to complete a make-up professional-development day; Reveles said a make-up PD session has already been scheduled in December. Borrego requested written confirmation from district legal counsel Steve Blanco that paying staff under these circumstances would not constitute an improper gifting of public funds.
"authorize payment of hourly personnel as recommended by legal counsel," said Trustee Mendoza as she moved the motion; Trustee Simental seconded. The board recorded votes as Mrs. Barnes-Yes, Ms. Borrego-No, Mrs. Mendoza-Yes, Mr. Rodriguez-Yes, Mr. Simental-Yes and Mrs. Zuniga-Yes. The motion passed.
No members of the public had signed up to speak during the meeting’s public-comment period, and the board adjourned at 12:00 PM. The minutes note the make-up PD timing and the request that legal counsel provide written confirmation; the board relied on legal recommendation in approving payroll for affected hourly employees.
