Belen secures $40,000 Phase 2 animal-safety grant; committee to plan use

Summer Ludwig, the city grant administrator, told the council the City had received Phase 2 funding of $40,000 through an animal-safety grant and said the money would be used to improve kennels at the animal facility so the facility can accommodate overnight stays in addition to day use. "The City had received Phase 2 funding in the amount of $40,000 through the animal safety grant," she announced.
Richard Nittle, speaking for the Belen Animal Safety Committee and the nonprofit VBP, thanked the council and said he would convene the committee — including Councilor Tracy Armijo and the Mayor Pro Tem — to determine a sustainable direction for the funds. Nittle reported that "three spay/neuter clinics had been completed in the area to date, with hundreds of animals served," and acknowledged local business sponsors including Soul and Chili Circle, Tea Dominoes, and the Range Cafe.
