Resident urges expanded bus service between Belen and Veguita
Summary
A Belen resident asked the council to extend or create a bus route connecting Belen with Veguita and La Joya, saying existing service to Albuquerque carries few riders and arguing the change "would cost little to nothing additional given existing staff and equipment." He also said lack of transport has led to law-enforcement contact.

Merl Chief, a Belen-area resident, told the City Council that he faces regular transportation challenges traveling between Veguita and Belen and urged the council to consider extending local bus service. "The existing bus route running between Belen and Albuquerque carries very few passengers and suggested that a similar route extending from Belen out to Veguita or La Joya - approximately to the Dollar General at the edge of Valencia County - would cost little to nothing additional given existing staff and equipment," he said.
Chief said his lack of transportation "frequently results in contact with law enforcement," framing the request as both a mobility and a public-safety concern. The council received the comment during the public-comment portion of the July 20 meeting; no formal motion or staff directive was recorded at that time.
