Superintendent reports enrollment dip, bond bids, turf installation and concession-stand repairs

Superintendent Dr. Brian Nichols told the Canton ISD Board of Trustees on Oct. 21 that district enrollment was 2,305 as of Oct. 21, 2024, down from 2,345 at the same time last year. He provided campus-level counts: Canton High School (CHS) 650; Canton Junior High (CJH) 557; Canton Intermediate (CIH) 532; Canton Elementary School (CES) 564.
Dr. Nichols also reported several operational items: bids were received for phase one of the bond project (the multi-purpose facility), and a special board meeting may be needed next week to approve a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) if bids come in as expected. Turf installation on the baseball and softball fields was planned to begin next week with an expected two-week installation window. A fire at the football field concession stand required ceiling removal and electrical-circuit replacement; renovation costs were estimated at approximately $15,000 to $20,000 and the ticket booth was affected when power was turned off.
The superintendent additionally noted that a bus ordered in September 2024 is expected to be delivered in the coming weeks, and he listed upcoming extracurricular dates including CHS band regional and area competitions and athletic contest dates.
