Director of Special Programs Dr. Yvonne Hensley briefed the board Oct. 28 on the district’s English Learner program evaluation. She reported that 1,091 students are served (about 8.6% of district enrollment) and that all teachers serving those students are ESL certified.
Hensley described language-proficiency monitoring through Language Proficiency Assessment Committees (LPAC), which meet at the beginning, middle and end of year (BOY, MOY, EOY). Based on 2024 TELPAS and new rules, the district reclassified 161 students in 2024 compared with approximately 33 in 2023. ELPS updates are effective soon with district implementation planned for 2026–27; the district said it is working to close remaining gaps between Emergent Bilingual students and the general student population.
