Superintendent outlines facilities priorities as some schools reach capacity

Gainesville ISD Superintendent Dr. Des Stewart told trustees on Nov. 18 that several district facilities items are underway and that capacity pressures remain a priority.
Dr. Stewart said three of five schools are currently at or above capacity, prompting discussion about portable buildings to relieve overcrowding. The district expects completion of a new administration building at 900 North Grand in mid-to-late December, is beginning phase one of auditorium renovations, is in the last phase of the GHS track project, and is considering converting the existing administration building into a Head Start Center for Early Learners. He also noted plans to partner with an architect to build a secure vestibule and expand the Junior High library.
The superintendent listed upcoming facility meetings and said the Facilities Steering Committee had 25 attendees at the Oct. 29 Edison meeting and 22 at the Nov. 14 Junior High meeting; a final meeting to narrow project scope was scheduled for Dec. 12 at Chalmers Elementary.
