The Gainesville Independent School District Board of Trustees on Nov. 18 approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Muenster ISD to provide transportation for a four-year-old Gainesville student who the ARD committee determined requires placement at the Regional School for the Deaf in Denton.
According to the board packet, the placement offers instruction from a certified teacher of the deaf, interpreting services and a communication-rich environment; because the placement is in Denton, the district is obligated to arrange transportation. "We are requesting that the board accept this MOU so the student can begin transportation services on November 20, 2024," the recommendation states. Laura Otts moved and Nathan Dempsey seconded the motion; the trustees voted 5–0 to approve the agreement.
Board and administration framed the item as a legally required service under special-education law, and the board approved the motion without additional conditions.
