Port Washington reports 5,018 students; elementary section changes limit new additions

Dr. Shields told the Board of Education that the district-wide count completed on July 29 showed 5,018 students across kindergarten through 12th grade, 46 fewer than the same time last year. "We recently calculated an enrollment report for the entire district on July 29," he said. Using that count, the district does not expect further section changes before school opens.
The presentation included school-level adjustments: Daley Elementary remains at 19 sections and a building total of about 462 students (including Pre-K and special-education self-contained classes); Guggenheim corrected a calculation and reduced third-grade sections from four to three; Manor Haven added a first-grade section (moving some classes from 22–23 to smaller class sizes); and Sousa declined from 28 to 27 sections. Dr. Shields also said incoming kindergarten enrollment is approximately 329 students, which allowed district leaders to reallocate staff and increase elementary math AIS positions from seven to 10 to expand intervention services. Trustees asked follow-up questions about the stability of projections and Dr. Shields said he did not expect large swings before school opens.
