Staff said the system is largely proprietary for cameras and that replacing the platform would require swapping out some or all hardware. IT/facilities staff estimated the district’s coverage at roughly 740 cameras across 19 facilities and described the storage and bandwidth needs of continuous, high‑quality video retention.
Staff recommended renewing the Verkada license while conducting a two‑year evaluation of alternative vendors and configurations. The plan described using the first two years to solicit pricing for componentized solutions (separate vendors for cameras, access control, analytics) and then, if a transition is chosen, phasing a move off Verkada during the final three years of the contract to limit disruption.
Board members asked about warranty, hardware refreshes, mobile unlocking features and analytics capabilities. Staff said many advanced analytics are built into the current platform and that secretaries and building administrators value having a dedicated, easy‑to‑use interface for screening visitors.
The presentation did not include a formal motion or final board vote on the renewal during this meeting; staff characterized the recommendation as a thoughtful, staged approach and committed to returning with cost comparisons and next steps for the board to review.
