Cannon Beach adopts ordinance regulating elk interactions, council calls for outreach

The Cannon Beach City Council on Aug. 6 adopted Ordinance 26‑05, an amendment to Municipal Code Chapter 6.14 that establishes rules and public education measures for elk interactions. The ordinance passed on second reading and will become effective 30 days after adoption.
Council members discussed outreach measures to educate residents and visitors about safe behavior during elk calving and rut seasons. One councilor urged visible, seasonal signage modeled on previous fireworks outreach: "I'd like to see something like that incorporated in with this now that we are working... yard signs go out seasonally during calving season, during rut," the councilor said. Members suggested placing signs in parks, using messaging on windbreaks at the tennis/pickleball courts and coordinating park materials.
Councilors said education is a first step and that the ordinance provides a platform for additional seasonal outreach. The ordinance was approved by roll call vote and staff was directed to produce outreach materials and consider a media release to let residents and visitors know about the new regulations.
