Resident urges board to address perceived errors in property reassessments

Gary Palmer, a resident who provided his address to the board, addressed the Barre Town Board during public comment to dispute recent property reassessments. "Somebody somewhere has screwed up," Palmer said, telling the board his appraisal doubled and that his property was reclassified from agricultural to rural residential despite nearly half of his land being a woodlot he manages for lumber. He said comparable sales used for some assessments were drawn from neighboring towns rather than sales in Barre and argued that lack of public water and a well that runs dry should lower market value.
Board members responded that the town board does not set state assessment methodology and encouraged Palmer to make an appointment with the assessor to seek clarification; the chair also noted the town's grievance day is the forum for formal appeals. The assessor's update later in the meeting said the tentative roll will be filed on 05/01/2026 and property owners may file formal grievances for review on 05/26/2026 under New York real property tax law.
