President Bruce Dowdy instructed Office Manager/Treasurer Kari Scott to compile a list of properties that have inactive utility accounts so the village can identify properties that may be abandoned, neglected, or otherwise unsafe. Dowdy presented that work as a preparatory step to drafting an ordinance and said staff-collected data will inform which properties may be subject to enforcement.
Dowdy also said he will consult Village Attorney Scott Garwood about drafting ordinance language consistent with state law and about enforcement mechanisms including monthly fines, placing liens and potential demolition of unsafe structures. The board reviewed sample ordinances from several nearby municipalities as part of this preparatory work; no ordinance language was adopted at the meeting.
