The Village of Stonington Board of Trustees reviewed a workers' compensation issue affecting Police Chief Travis Peden during its July 14 committee meeting. President Bruce Dowdy said Peden was released for light duty and that the workers' compensation representative had mishandled the claim, leaving Peden to exhaust paid leave and borrow from next year.
Office Manager Kari Scott told the board that, in her conversation with the workers' compensation representative, "there will be a check in the mail approximately $3,700.00 to correct this mishandling of the claim." Dowdy said the mishandling meant Peden should have been receiving temporary partial disability pay and that the Village should have been reimbursed for two‑thirds of hours not worked because of limited light‑duty availability.
Trustees discussed the Village's obligation to restore Peden's paid time after the repayment is processed and asked for the issue to be brought back if further complications arise. No formal vote or personnel action was taken at the meeting; the board placed a separate item to clarify work‑hour language in the Employee Handbook on the Aug. 4 agenda.
