Keller Collegiate Academy students, parents urge board to protect program as budget review begins

Dozens of KCA students, parents and former teachers told the Keller ISD board during public comment that the district must preserve current studentsaccess to the program while trustees examine costs.
"KCA is a place of educational excellence," one student said, urging the board not to dismantle classes that provide dual-credit and career training. Speakers noted KCA has earned multiple TEA distinctions and that many classes are dual-credit, which students said affects GPA weighting and college opportunities.
Parents and teachers described specific harms they said would follow staffing cuts or limiting KCA to upper grades: reduced extracurricular programming, lost club leadership, and lower college-and-career measures that generate CTE and CCMR funding. A former KCA teacher warned that cutting staff from a program of roughly a dozen teachers would "sabotage" opportunities the campus provides.
District administrators told the board they have not decided to close KCA and intend to allow currently enrolled students to finish the program. Superintendent-level staff said a review is necessary because flat revenue and rising costs require identifying efficiencies and that the district will explore program changes only for future cohorts.
The board did not take further action on KCA during the meeting; trustees asked staff to continue communicating with families and to return with options in future budget work sessions.
