The Oregon City Commission on Aug. 5 approved first reading of ordinance 26-1011 to adopt a new official city flag, advancing the measure to a second reading at the next regular meeting.
Jared Lyman, communications manager for the city, presented the ordinance and described components of the selected design: "The ordinance specifies the design of the flag with the white lines representing the municipal elevator, fishing platforms, and Willamette Falls, the green stripe representing the McLaughlin Promenade, and the green square representing our parks as town squares envisioned by the initial town plat," he said. The ordinance also sets color values and multiple formats for use in printing and online materials.
Commissioners complimented the outreach process and the flag's simplicity. Commissioner Smith said he was "actually really pleased with the outcome of the flag" and noted student engagement and public comment during the design process. The motion to approve first reading was moved and seconded and passed by unanimous roll call.
Lyman said staff will provide cost estimates for tabletop flags or lapel pins at the next meeting when commissioners requested pricing information for small promotional items.
