Council discusses Rumpke takeover, service hiccups and ADA curbside concerns

London City Council heard an update from city staff about the new sanitation contractor, Rumpke, and early operational problems after Rumpke assumed collection responsibilities from Mid Ohio.
Steve, speaking for city staff, said Rumpke "officially took over after last [Bridal]... Monday they started picking up trash" and that the city has held regular calls to address issues. He said data did not transfer cleanly from Mid Ohio, producing missed recycling and special-pickup records that the city and Rumpke are working to reconcile. "We plan to present to committees the sale of equipment that has no other value to the city," Steve said when describing next steps for leftover sanitation assets and fund proceeds.
Council members described the problems as largely first-week "hiccups" but asked staff to clarify ADA curbside requirements and communication plans before posting guidance. Steve said the contract requires Rumpke to continue curbside service for ADA-eligible and senior households but that some documentation questions remain; he said the city will consult the law director about what public instructions can be posted. Council and staff encouraged residents with missed pickups to call Rumpke and the city so problems can be resolved promptly.
The council asked staff to return with clearer guidance for residents on how to register for special pickups and any documentation needed for ADA curbside service; staff will continue weekly coordination calls with Rumpke to track and fix missed pickups.
